I’m pretty stoked to announce that I’ve finished another deck of cards!

If you’re a tarotist, you’ve probably heard of The Readers Studio. This is a year conference held in NYC and organized by The Tarot School. This year I’ll be presenting a PM Study Group on the topic of divination with the Lenormand Oracle. I started racking my brains back in September trying to figure out the best way to teach a class about a deck of cards that it was unlikely that everyone would have a copy of — so I decided that what I needed to do was bring copies of a deck to the conference for my Study Group atendees to use. I’m sadly out of Melissa Lenormands and the Wicked Sibyl isn’t exactly the most traditional deck out there (nor is it finished, stop chomping at the bit about that one for a few months now!! ). I started work on a simplified, clarified deck of cards that would convey the traditional symbols, titles, numbers and playing card suits. The result is the Lenormand below — which, for the purposes of differentiating it from all the other decks out there — I’m calling the Postmark Lenormand (the title card uses a postmark and a first class mail stamp).

The deck has 36 cards, one title card. It will come with a LWB pamphlet of keywords and be sent with a simple bag. I wish I had photos of the finished product to show you, but I need to take pre-orders to help offset printing costs. Here’s how orders on this Lenormand deck will work:

• If you’re going to be at my PM Study Group at Readers Studio, DON’T pre-order the deck. You will be given the opportunity to buy a copy at a discount after the workshop.

• If you’re planning on being at Readers Studio and want to pick one up from me there, you can pre-order one and NOT pay any shipping (just spend the funds for the deck via paypal to melissa@tarotbymelissa.com and let me know what it’s for and who you are).

• If you can’t make it to New York at the end of April and want me to mail you one in early May (when I get back from the conference), you can order one and pay extra shipping.

The deck will be $18 + shipping. 36 cards, 1 title card, LWB with keywords, in a nice little bag (that will NOT be organza, don’t worry!). The cards are poker-sized (so keep in mind when viewing the images I’ve posted that almost half an inch will be cut from the sides of each card).

The Fantastic Menagerie Tarot is so beautiful. I’m just completely blown away every time I open up this box. The only tiny little issue that I have with these cards is that the stock is not as heavy as my Tarot of Prague (which was the special, limited first edition printing).

I’m a big fan of J.J. Grandville and I’m planning my next tattoo based on his illustrations.

Awhile back I bought The Oracle of the Radiant Sun on eBay for a dollar. To be honest, it never occurred to me that I could buy tarot decks from eBay before — though it never occurred to me to try and sell readings on eBay either. Anyway, this oracle deck and book set caught my eye somewhere at sometime and it had been in the back of my mind until I saw it up for auction.

My first thought upon opening the package was that it was really poorly packaged. One of the covers of the book folded to make part of the box meant to hold the cards. So if I were to just read the book, all the cards would fall out of the box anyway and the box would still be attached to the book! And by cutting the box from the book (which I did do), I no longer had a box to keep the cards in. Needless to say I’m putting them in a little drawstring bag that I purchased from this seller on etsy. (I haven’t gotten the bag yet, but the picture of the fabric just matches the cards perfectly!)

Anyway, I just finished my first professional reading with these cards yesterday and I really, really enjoyed it! The spreads offered in the back of the book are so flexible that questions are answered in a snap (if you know something about astrology). Now, I admit that astrology isn’t my strongest suit, but it doesn’t take a lot of knowledge to understand the basics behind these cards. I was really impressed by how a romance reading flowed using the horary reading method outlined in the text. I’ve done several “yearly” readings for friends with these cards, but I really enjoyed this horary reading and think that this will become a staple of my card reading offerings.

Of course the cards are really beautiful as well.

I thought this would be a good opportunity to use my Talismans of Success oracle deck, published by Lo Scarabeo. It’s a strange little deck of 32 cards. Reminds me of reading playing cards with the 2-6′s removed. Each card has a number and a talisman on it, which is defined in the LWB as “an object, a symbol, or a figure belonging to the realms of nature, to which man has attributed supernatural protective powers since very ancient times for help in confronting daily life and fulfilling desires.” Now that sentence is quite a mouthful!

I haven’t really investigated this deck much because the cards are sort of funny and the colors are weird, but lately I’ve felt like I should give it a second chance. I see a lot of potential in these talismans for meditation and energy work (in terms of manifesting certain energies in your life). The LWB suggests two spreads and the one that follows is a modified version of the four card spread in the book. From top right, clockwise:

1. The Situation
2. What is coming
3. What direction to take
4. What you will find

1. The situation: #9 Equilibrium. The LWB definitions are extremely limited and don’t make a whole lot of sense on their own. It reads, “Bamboo strenghtens spiritual serenity, inner balance, accordance within couples and willingness toward success.” Equilibrium is also defined as “a stable situation in which forces cancel one another” or “a state of dynamic systems in which there is no net change”. My feeling on the situation at hand is that CollegeGrad’s current job is too comfortable to force her to make the drastic changes she needs break out. While equilibrium can be good if you’re happy and comfortable, homeostasis isn’t ideal for building momentum. My thought is that in your current situation, you’re not yet thinking outside the box. Try to shake things up and see where the cards land.

2. What is coming: #22 Honor. The Talisman is a purse that promises money and success in professions. I would say that you’re definitely in store for a much needed break! Make sure you take the reward for what it’s worth because you deserve it. This card is a sign of an offer you should not refuse. Stop losing sleep over this. You’re going to have a great career if you just trust your…

3. What direction to take: #14 Intuition! Ah ha! I love it when the cards do this. The talisman of intuition is a key that you hold within yourself. Trust your gut. You will make the right decisions which will lead to…

4. What you will find: #12 Study. Gentian, the flower of temperance. Satisfaction of the intellect and body (gentian as a digestive aid, for example, you might find your stresses melting away) all in one. I’d say you don’t have anything to worry about, CollegeGrad. I know that it’s hard to see your situation from the outside, but you’re already so much ahead of so many of your peers!

Here’s another little hint I can give you, CollegeGrad:

If you add your birth date to the current year and reduce (11+6+2007= 2024 and 2+0+2+4=8) you’ll come up with the current “year card” for you which is Strength. Patience and stamina are very much a part of the lessons that Strength carries with her. Try some meditation exercises with this card and see if your moods change. You just might find, by welcoming this challenging energy rather than resisting it, the struggle you’re having right now will dissipate and you’ll at least be more at peace.
